I'm a forty-something-year-old mom of two boys in grade school; stepmom of an all-grown-up (and just how did that happen?) girl, and am getting close to celebrating twenty years with their father. We live in Southern Ontario, recently moving to a house on a lake that I love. Hubby has his own business - I do his computer and administrative stuff from home. As well, I'm involved in a yearbook company using a multimedia concept, which is pretty fun and challenging computer work. I also teach computer courses at night school. My goal is to make a living as a work-at-home-mom. To me this would be "having it all". Sometimes it feels like that means having all the work and that it would be easier working nine to five. But, I'm afraid that might result in losing my connection with my children. I want to be a mom first and whatever else I am second. Before having children I was a Business Systems Analyst in corporate Canada, so I do know what working outside of the home is like. I was lucky to have spent my twenties travelling for business and have seen most of my own country this way, as well as many parts of the States. When I had the boys, I had to make the decision about what I wanted to be now that I was a grown up. I realized that the parts of my job that I liked the most were the teaching and the writing, so I started writing freelance for a couple of Canadian computer magazines. Shortly afterwards, I returned to school, completing my teaching certificate. I took the bulk of my education courses through online learning. So, this has all led me to where I am now. I'm a wife and mom. I'm still a business-woman. I'm a teacher. I'm a writer. I have yet to be published in fiction, but then I've yet to submit anything either! I'm still trying to find my writing niche there - I like to write everything and can't yet fill in the blank in the sentence, "I write ______. (mystery, humour, poetry, etc.) I've been a member at WVU since early 1998, but
selfishly turned my back whenever the idea of volunteering came up for
the first year or so - I just wanted to take courses and hang with my study
group. However, the temptation of doing work that combined both education
and writing was too much to resist. That's how I've ended up doing
what I do here now. I also actively belong to a couple of other online
writing groups. I have learned that, for me, getting involved keeps
me motivated and progressing towards my goals. I also believe in
the saying that, "if you want to learn more about something, teach it".
