Fiction: At this time. we prefer short stories of
literary quality between 2,500 and 10,000 words. Contrary to
popular trends, we encourage long, well-constructed
sentences, artful adverbs, and image-evoking adjectives if
they are well-paced and advance the story without wasted
words.
Tip: Know the difference between long sentences and
sentences that sound long. Look for the rhythm when read
aloud.
Payment: We pay $30 and one copy of the printed edition on
publication. You may order additional copies through Amazon.
Short-Shorts or Flash Fiction: We occasionally use
fiction under 2,500 words. Payment is $10 per thousand
words.
For stories under 1,000 words we pay $10.
Tip: Trick endings don't work.
Poetry: We publish all forms of formal and free verse.
All poems should be original. Payment starts at $15 for a
single poem to $30 for a group of poems by a single writer
appearing in the same issue. A maximum of five poems may be
submitted at one time with no more than one manuscript
submission per reading period. We are looking for literary
quality and do not want greeting card verse. Length per poem
should not exceed 60 lines.
Craft Articles: We are looking for a few good writers to
work on assignment. We will consider articles under 5,000
words. If the subject is fresh, targeting literary writers,
then send a proposal.
Tip: Look beyond the typical how-to articles and consider
applying concepts from other disciplines to the writing
process.
Payment: We pay $10 per thousand words and one copy of the
printed edition on publication. You may order additional
copies through Amazon.
Essays: We publish one writer-related, thought-provoking
essay per issue. The preferred length is 2,500 to 5,000
words. For an idea of what we like, see Sergio Troncoso’s
essay in our Jan. 2009 issue.
Payment: We pay $30 and one copy of the printed edition on
publication. You may order additional copies through Amazon.
We also publish the best Letters to the Editor (no payment).
